Women are certainly bombarded with marketing about skin care products. You can’t watch TV or open a magazine without promises of a more youthful appearance and fading wrinkles.

But what is hype and what is truth? Can women really expect results from today’s skin care products? 

What expectations are reasonable? Are there really any miracles in a bottle?

We went to Deborah Duffey, the president of Dermazone Solutions, a national/international life-science company that manufactures two cosmeceutical brands of skin care products, as well as products for private label pharmaceutical and cosmetic distribution, to get help with separating fact from hype.

A native Bostonian, Deborah Duffey graduated from Stonehill College with a bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology in 1982. Soon thereafter, she stayed in the Boston area, leading a number of feasibility studies on how to support and sustain growth within companies and organizations throughout the nation. Despite a successful career in the Northeast, she decided to move to the Tampa Bay region in 1991, and nearly 25 years later, she has not once regretted the move to the central west coast of Florida.

 

 

“If I had to describe Tampa Bay in three separate words, those words would be: Vibrant. Diversified. Friendly.” Duffey says. “This community is vibrant in that it is growing steadily and rapidly. Case in point? When Duffey first arrived in Tampa Bay, she continued her work as a consultant, but thanks to the region’s top-notch professional network, in just five years, she landed at Fountain Pharmaceuticals – nowadays known as Dermazone Solutions, a worldwide leader in the life sciences industry. Today, she runs the company as its president and chief product development officer.

May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection & Prevention Month

It is that time of the year in which we recognize and bring AWARENESS to SKIN CANCER DETECTION and PREVENTION.

Here in the Sunshine State, we have already been experiencing the summer-like temperatures! Skin cancer is a very serious and dangerous disease that can be fatal. Routine checkups and preventative measures are crucial to keeping you and your loved ones safe.

Here are some general (and startling) skin cancer facts from the Skin Cancer Foundation:

• Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually.
   
• Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.
   
• Treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers increased by nearly 77 percent between 1992 and 2006.
   
• Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined.
   
• One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
    
• Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer; an estimated 2.8 million are diagnosed annually in the US. BCCs are rarely fatal, but can be highly disfiguring if allowed to grow.
   
• Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common form of skin cancer. An estimated 700,000 cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the US.
    
• Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either BCC or SCC at least once.
   
• Actinic keratosis is the most common precancer; it affects more than 58 million Americans.
    
• About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
   
• Half of all adults report at least one sunburn in the past 12 months.

• Every blistering sunburn doubles the likelihood of skin cancer formation.

•  One person dies of melanoma every hour (every 57 minutes).

  

As part of a prevention plan, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Bizwomen Mentoring Monday

Kara Vita proudly participated in the kickoff of Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Bizwomen Mentoring Monday, hosted at Metropolitan Ministries. This national event offers women the opportunity to meet and be mentored by 40 of the most influential women in business within the community.

One-on-one five-minute sessions allowed attendees to converse and be mentored by many successful and respected women, including Kara Vita president Deborah Duffey. Mentoring Monday also provided the opportunity for the mentors to share and learn from one another.

Executive Committee Members Sharon Less and Charlene McKee also participated at the event, speaking with all of the guests about Kara Vita.

This event also generated buzz on our Twitter page @karavitaskin; as many engaged, chatting about Mentoring Monday, and our contest, where one lucky winner could win a $250 Kara Vita gift card.
